Changing Lives: The Journey of Elaine West, Founder of Rooterville Animal Sanctuary

Vkind Connects host Shabnam Islam talks with Elaine West about going vegan for the animals.

Elaine West of Rooterville Animal Sanctuary and Pink Pigs Boutique went vegan in her twenties after seeing footage and hearing about what happens on meat and dairy farms. She got into animal sanctuary work after saving 100 lives left at a chicken farm and continues to save the lives of animals today.

Elaine encourages the public to come and visit with the rescued animals in order to understand, love, and make a connection with sentient beings. One hundred percent of the proceeds from Pink Pigs Boutique go right back to Rooterville Animal Sanctuary to continue the work.

Elaine founded Rooterville Animal Sanctuary Inc. with the help and support of her late husband and partner Dale West, in 2004. Today, Elaine serves as president and leads a team of eight that handles everything in the daily operations of the business and upkeep of the sanctuary, as well as caring for the amazing animals that call the sanctuary home.

​"I grew up around farms and farmers. Of all the animals, I loved the pigs the best. There is nothing cuter than a baby pig. In my youth, I nursed many runts to health. When potbellied pigs came to the US, I had to have one. So, I saved up and bought two! It was no surprise my first rescue was a little gray potbellied pig who won me over at hello when she rolled over for her belly rub at the sound of a friendly voice at a local Humane Society that was giving her away to be eaten. That little pig changed everything!"

How Tracye McQuirter Reinvents Herself – and You Can Too!

Over the last three-plus decades, Tracye McQuirter, MPH, has been a source of inspiration and empowerment for an untold number of animal welfare activists, public health professionals, and nearly everyone in the vegan community. The superstar public health nutritionist, vegan activist, and bestselling author of Ageless Vegan and By Any Greens Necessary sat down with Dr. Shabnam Islam for the latest episode of Vkind Connects.

McQuirter shares her inspiring, fascinating story on her journey towards becoming vegan, building acceptance for the vegan lifestyle within the Black community, and authoring two tremendously successful books because there were no vegan books at the time that were geared towards Black women. She also led the 10,000 Black Vegan Women Movement, a groundbreaking public health campaign that promotes plant-based nutrition and community support to address preventable health crises among African American women.
